Nanded, the holy city of the Sikhs

Nanded was not intended to become a sacred city. This city is at east of Maharashtra, it’s a city with less population.

Its history is quite old. But its sacred character comes from Gobind Singh, the 10th and the last Sikh guru.

On the death of Aurangzeb, Bahadur Shah became the new Mughal emperor. He invited Gobind Singh to meet him in the Deccan in order to begin a process of reconciliation between the Mughal empire and the Sikhs. Gobind Singh therefore moved to Nanded so that talks could begin.

The war of succession between Bahadur Shah and his brothers (a constant in the history of the Mughal empire) delayed the process. Meanwhile, Wazir Khan, a Mughal army general, sent two assassins to kill the guru. Some sources reads that the order did not come from Wazir Khan.

The two assassins committed their crime and were killed in the assassination attempt. Gobind Singh died from his wounds on October 7, 1708.

• The tour begins at the foot of the Clock tower.
• We will then go to the banks of the Godavari river to discover the gurudwara, the Sikh temples.
• We will head to the main gurudwara, where Gobind Singh’s grave is.
